There’s a lot to think about when it comes to moving homes, which makes it easy to let the little things slip through the cracks. To help ensure you don’t forget any of the essentials, make sure you take time to do the below before the big day:

  1. Transfer utilities: Organise your utilities in the weeks leading up to your move to ensure that you’ll have access to things like internet, water, gas and electricity as soon as you need it.

  1. Notify important contacts and businesses: Let all relevant contacts and businesses know your new address and contact details. To help ensure you don’t miss anyone it can be worth organising a mail redirection service with Australia Post. This will give you a bit of extra time to alert everyone you need to.

  1. Schedule professionals ahead of time: Planning on getting a cleaner in? Or want to hire removalists? It’s best to arrange professionals early, as some companies may book out in advance.

  1. Label moving boxes: Labelling all of your moving boxes will help make unpacking much less stressful, enabling you to find the things you need when you’re looking for them. It’s also worth packing an overnight bag with key items you’ll want to get to as soon as you move, such as clothes or toiletries.

  1. Organise pet and/or baby sitters: With so much happening during a move, why not ask for as much help as you can? Find a dedicated person to look after children or pets so they don’t get lost in the chaos. Some people also check their pets into a pet motel for the night to ensure they are kept safe.

  1. Make sure you’re insured at your new home: It’s a good idea to call up your insurance provider and make sure you are covered as soon as you move into your new home, as well as during the move. If you’re using a moving company, ask them if they have an insurance policy and what it covers. You don’t want any of your items to be damaged as they are being transported between homes.
