Are you lucky enough to have an extra room in your home that you don’t know what do with? While a spare bedroom seems like a good problem to have, a lot of homeowners are at a loss as to what to do with theirs and they may end up leaving it empty or utilising it for storage space. If you’re not sure what to do to make the most of your spare bedroom we have come up with a few ideas:

Guest room – If you have a lot of visitors or grown up children that regularly visit then it makes sense to turn a spare bedroom into a guest room. Add a bed and a little bit of storage space and keep the room clean and tidy and ready for overnight guests. You may even be able to rent out the room for a bit of extra income.

Home office – Whether you work from home or are just in need of a space to sort through bills, a home office can be a great place for some quiet solitude. A home office can be a great way to utilise a small room, as all you need is a desk, chair and some shelves for a decent set-up.

Kid’s playroom – Anyone who has kids will know that their toys have a habit of taking over the whole house. To keep those toys contained it may be worth dedicating a room for the kids to play in so they can have fun and make a mess without impacting the rest of the house.

Multifunctional space – If you can’t decide what to do with a spare room then let it serve more than one purpose. If you need a room to be flexible and adaptable to your needs, be clever with your furniture choices. Consider using a bed that folds from the wall so that you can use a room as a bedroom when needed, and as an office or recreational pace the rest of the time.

Presenting a spare bedroom when selling – Some sellers are unsure of how to present their spare bedroom at sale time. It’s best not to leave a room empty as this can make it hard for potential buyers to picture what the room could be used for. Be guided by the furniture you already have, or by the size of the room. In general though it’s best to simply decorate a spare room as an extra bedroom or as a study.
